4 Just an observation...Collin's posts seem very cold, very detached, almost not human. Little emotion. Sparing use of contractions. The language sems stilted and overly formal. I think an alien life form has taken over the once-real Collin--the one his parents used to bounce on their knees when he was a little tyke--and have created...Colon Babbler, Left-Winger from a Far-Away Planet who seems to say outlandish things just to get a rise out of us earthlings. Captured Zarqawi Aide an American

An American was captured late last year fighting for Abu Musab Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq, the group responsible for dozens of beheading murders of civilians. Coalition forces are now holding him as an 'enemy combatant'.

I have a better word for him: traitor.

I can think of no better candidate for extraordinary rendition. After every last ounce of information is gently extracted for him then I say we send him to Saudi Arabia. I hear they have a most fitting form of execution.

U.S. forces in Iraq are holding an associate of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who holds joint American-Jordanian citizenship, defense officials said yesterday.
The man was snared in a raid by U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq late in 2004, according to a Pentagon spokesman, who said weapons and bomb-making materials were in his residence.
The man was described as a personal associate of Zarqawi and an emissary to insurgent groups in several cities in Iraq.
The officials said that the man holds joint U.S.-Jordanian citizenship, but declined to provide his hometown or otherwise identify him.
After his capture, a panel of three U.S. officers determined that he was an enemy combatant and therefore not entitled to prisoner-of-war status under the Geneva Convention, the spokesman said.
He is still being held as a security threat but has been visited by representatives of the International Committee on the Red Cross.
He is the first American known to be captured fighting for the insurgency in Iraq.

Let me note, though, that dozens of Europeans have been captured fighting for the terrorists. However, all of them have been Muslim immigrants or the children of immigrants.

He is being held at an internment facility in Iraq," said Lieutenant Colonel Guy Rudisill, spokesman for detainee affairs. "He's being held along with other detainees."
Rudisill said he had no details on the man's age or where he was from in the United States. He said he was born in Jordan and received U.S. citizenship later, but it was not known when. He has been interrogated by U.S. forces.
"We do know from interrogation that he has strong ties to the al-Zarqawi network," Rudisill said.
Legal action against the detainee will be taken in coordination with the Iraqi government, he added, leaving open the possibility that he could be handed over to the U.S. Justice Department.
Rudisill said the fact an American had been held in connection with the insurgency was only emerging now because no one had asked about it previously.

11 No, citizenship has nothing to do with the heart; it is a legal status bestowed on individuals by a bureacracy - either in birth or immigration. Having an American passport allowed this mofo to take advantage of our extensive bilateral migration agreements - visa free access to most of Central and South America, Europe, Canada, much of Africa, Australia, Taiwan, Japan, Phillipines, and certain Middle Eastern states (including the West Bank and Gaza, normally off limits to Arabs). Only Canadian citizenship is more widely accepted visa free. As for migration in general, we need all the high-skilled migrants we can handle (I am an immigrant myself). We could easily absorb another 25 million 20somethings with university diplomas. Al Qaeda has been practically exterminated - can you even think of their last major operation outside of Iraq? On the other hand, there is still China and India to compete with and the Chinese defense budget is growing at an incredible pace.

14 I agree. And contrary to whar that clown Clinton said, not EVERY American should go to college. I think this for two reasons: 1. If everyone has a degree or degrees, it lessons their value (if they have any left, that is). College degrees today are the high school diplomas of yesteryear.It's taken for granted that EVERYONE MUST HAVE ONE> 2. If everyone has a diploma, who will mop the floors, pump the gas, or as you say, pick the fruit? (These jobs are probably more worthwhile than a lot of white collar ones, anyway.)

9 Rod: Becker's justification for using this instrument is founded on more than the fact that it's used extensively in poor countries, but it's not irrelevant that one of the consequences of its use is the expansion, rather the contraction, of capitalism. His argument is that there's no such thing as fine-tuning the bankruptcy laws, because they're by definition a blunt instrument. Besides, a Nobel Laureate in Ecenomics gets the benefit of the doubt over you... good looking as I'm sure you are.

5 Yup.. it's 3;40 am and the top story is that the Pope is in a coma; he will not come out of this. It's only a matter offf a short time before His Holiness dies. I know I will surely miss him. He has suffered physically for so long that this will be a peace for him and he'll not feel any more pain nor suffering. I know I will be touched by this tremendous loss, unconsolabllle. He's already got his ticket to heaven and when the time comes, may he always be in peace. He will be surely missed and no matter what, no one can really take his place. The man was not only holy incarnate, but was always going somewhere to do something and 10's of thousands greeted him, catholic or not. He was an ambassador for all people and he affected anyone that came up to see him, sobbing before they even reached him. This will be my heartbreaker. Cindy

I spotted this in a Reuters story, and I've got a blog entry on the story here: Addressing her notorious visit to North Vietnam in 1972 -- which earned her the epithet "Hanoi Jane" -- Fonda insisted she had no regrets, apart from one moment when she posed with an anti-aircraft battery used to shoot down US pilots. Authorities have arrested a Palestinian man who allegedly trained al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in the past and returned to the Philippines for a possible terror mission, government officials said Thursday.
Fawas Ajjur, whom security officials suspect may be an al-Qaida operative, was arrested Saturday in Zamboanga City as he arrived after a baffling, circuitous journey that took him to Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, the officials said.
Ajjur did not have a visa and was taken into custody by immigration agents at the Zamboanga airport, Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr. said.
He was later allegedly identified by captured Abu Sayyaf guerrillas as one of the foreign militants who trained them in bomb-making near Patikul town of Jolo island a few years ago, a security official said on condition of anonymity.

Questions Raised Over Romanian Hostage Crisis

A reader from Romania has agreed to keep The Jawa Report up to speed on reactions from the Romanian press. It seems that speculation abounds that the whole hostage crisis may have been planned in advance.

He notes, though, that such conspiritorial speculation is common in his country that has seen such hard times in recent decades.

It seems that one of the hostages, Marie-Jeanne Ion, is the daughter of an important PSD member (the former government party). Thus, releasing her may be a top priority for the government. It also may explain why she was targetted.

What really seems to be raising suspicions, though, is that the entire expedition to Iraq was arranged by and planned by Omar Hayssam, who is described as a wealthy Arab immigrant to Romania. Hayssam is also being investigated for unrelated criminal activities. Hayssam is also business partners with Ion's father.

It was Hayssam that sent American Muhammed Monaf to accompany the journalists to Iraq. Mr. Hayssam also received the only known phone call demanding ransom and is said to be going to Iraq to act as an intermediary to obtain the hostages release.

This young man cannot feed himself, take himself to the bathroom, wash himself.....or hold a book up to his face to read. He can however commuicate by blinking his eyes. The law was further amended in 2003 to include minors; the version Bush signed dealt only with adults. The effect is to provide families with a last chance to get treatment for a patient who is deemed by a hospital to be beyond hope, AFTER an ethics committee reviews the case, keeping the matter out of the courts to the greatest extent possible. That's quite a bit different from the way you characterize it, isn't it?

70 I followed the Terri story for a long time now. I have never been so sickened in my entire life. How this is just in a Country that claims to be civil is completely beyond me. To hear about what has been happening to this woman for the first time one would think that such an injustice, such cruelty and such complete lack of morals and decency must surely only happen in some far away land unattached to any sense of being civil. Then to hear that this absolute mokery af all things just is happening in Florida, in the UNited States of America, that in a Country that values itself to be so much more civilized than the rest of the world is run by leaders who have no clue what the definition of civil and just really are. Or is this apparant to me only. I cannot put into words how deeply disgusted I am. 114 Regarding Terri, someone on another board mentioned what if she had been an organ donor? They would HAVE to keep her organs in tip top shape, therefore, they couldn't dehydrate or starve her. What a mess! A lot of people I've spoken to will now have to change their living wills. American Hostage in Iraq

U.S. news sources are finally reporting that an American was taken hostage in Iraq late Monday evening. CNN has a blurb here and AP is running a similar story. The name of the American hostage is Mohammed ( Muhammed ) Monaf, although no major U.S. media outlet is yet broadcasting that information. Mr. Monaf and the other hostages remain in our prayers.

Notice how both stories mention the State Departmen'ts silence? Something, ahem, we warned you about earlier....

Zarqawi Planning WMD Attack Europe

Forget Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is now the most dangerous man in the world.

The monthly German magazine "Cicero" claims that Zarqawi is planning a major attack in Europe. Zaman:

The magazine quotes a German intelligence official saying, "We fear that Zarqawi is planning a big explosion." Zarqawi is trying to source arms equipment from the region of Georgia and the northern Caucasus, according to Cicero. Another intelligence official says in the article that he does not know if Zarqawi has managed to procure arms. "We only know that he has been working on this," the official said. Cicero pointed out that at least 150-security guards are investigating a planned terrorist attack in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg or Berlin.

Zarqawi has made such threats in the past. In December, German papers ran stories alleging that the terrorist leader was planning a terror strike of greater magnitude than 9/11. What is new is that intelligence has specific targets.

A chemical weapons lab was found in Fallujah shortly, but no quantities of WMD were located. Fallujah was Zarqawi's headquarters until it was liberated by U.S. troops late last year.

Further, (WND):

Zarqawi is also being tried in absentia in Jordan for "planning a major chemical weapons attack that was uncovered by the authorities."

1 Heard all this before....don't you think that with everyone looking for him (use his real picture not that 20 year old pencil sketch) and with everyone's intel on these terrorist units, that we'll - meaning everyone else in the world - stop such an attack? They have stopped many attacks all over the world that we don't even know about. Donald Rumsfeld is down in South America having talks and everyone is on guard everywhere it seems. This too shall be stopped. Maybe little attacks with many deaths (unfortunately) will occur here and there but I don't think that a major catastrophe will happen. Zarqawi has always been the most dangerous man in the world. Bin Laden does talk, sends tapes, makes threats, but his hands never get dirty. Zarqawi on the other hand, doesn't care how dirty and disgusting his hands get. Lets hope we get them before they get anyone else. Or us. We are strong; we can bounce back. There's another to worry about every day without worrying about terrorist attacks. Let the ones who are supposed to take care of those things do their jobs and as always, just keep our eyes open. I heard that in Iraq, they have a nuclear station and that all 6 guards (only 6 guards?) had been killed several weeks ago. 3 Romanians and One American Shown on Hostage Video

Al Jazeera has aired a video showing the three Romanian journalists and their American translator taken hostage by an unknown group Monday evening.

The three Romanian hostages seen in the video are Marie Jeanne Ion, Sorin Dumitru Miscoci, and Edward Ovidiu Ohanesian. The major media still remains silent on the identity of the American hostage. Reuters, for instance, says:

a fourth unidentified person appeared on the undated tape on Wednesday sitting on the floor in front of what seemed to be blankets hung on the wall.

However, The Jawa Report has learned that the fourth victim is American Mohammed ( Muhammed ) Monaf. Mr. Monaf is reportedly a naturalized American citizen of Iraqi origin. He is said to have spent time studying in Romania and was acting as a guide and interpretor for the journalists.

Two armed men were also seen on the hostage video. Al Jazeera did not say what group, if any, had given them the tape. The pro-terrorist and anti-American television station also did not mention any demands being made for the hostages' release.

Romanian media have reported that the kidnappers have made ransom demands. It is not known whether those who abducted these hostages are insurgents looking to fund their activities or common criminals.

I would caution against jumping to any conclusions about this hostage crisis. Unlike the Giuliana Sgrena episode, these seem to be legitimate journalists.

However, I think the Italians, French, Fillippinos, and others who have paid ransom for the release of hostages never learned the lesson of my 5 year old daughter's book, If You Give a Mouse Some Cheese. Giving terrorists money is not a good idea on so many levels.......

Winston Churchill once famously described Russia as, "a riddle wrapped up in a mystery inside an enigma." The Middle East and Arab world might well be described in the same way today.

There is both much hope and much fear coming out of the Middle East today. On the one hand democracy and freedom seems to loom imminently on the horizon. On the other hand, those same democratic forces may unleash radical Islamist elements long suppressed by totalitarian tyranny.

Recently I was skimming through files uploaded by users at an Arabic forum. The images found at the website offer insight into the promise and perils of democracy in the Middle East. These images show that major differences exist within Arab societies in attitudes towards the West and modernism.

14 On Fox, every day, they always show something good that goes on in Iraq despite reporting all the bad news and the good news really outweighs the bad news. Think of our country; we didn't start out that easy and quick and wars were waged but look how far we have come in what? 300 years? Look how backwards the middle east is and they've been around forever. It'll take time but I believe that the people really want a decent life and hopefully will step up to the plate and make it happen. Just wish they'd settle in that new voted-in group they just made. Nationalism really has no place in our world today. Governing parties are selected not elected as you well know from experience in your own country. So you cannot be a traitor when you oppose the policies of a government that represents far less than half the voting nation. 'Enemies?' Since when were the Muslim/Arab world the enemy? 911? Bali? Aden? Lockerbie? Perhaps you are long overdue to examine closely how your intelligence agencies really operate abroad. It has been common practice for year to carry out 'false-flag' operations which are then blamed on some foreign party with the intent to galvanise public opinion in favour of yet another war. Also bear in mind that the US wars and dodgy allegiances (Israel) are illegal ACCORDING TO YOUR OWN CONSTITUTION. Perhaps it's time for a little self-examination.

Not because of some idealistic crusade to introduce democracy or to fight tyranny. The war in Iraq will produce an indeliable racial memory in the Iraqi people of Western aggression against them. Witness the use of chemical weapons and neutron bombs in Fallujah (Iraq) to 'pacify' the area. Pacification means: destroy every living thing. One day when your troops come home they may reveal the true story of what happened in Iraq. So to expect the Iraqi's to just 'get on with life' is perhaps to expect too much darling.

This is common knowledge here in the UK hence the continuing massive popular opposition to the occupation of Iraq. There are several strands to this that need clarification. Throughout the world Muslims are receiving bad press. Apart from a few noble exceptions, the media spin a one-size-fits-all image of Muslims as a people who are intolerant of other cultures and who think the whole world ought to be converted to Islam. Islamic fundamentalists, like fundamentalists of any religion, say certain things and do certain things that are not representative of the whole. Now, perception is fact. While the thinking man can see that they are people just like everyone else who have their families and their jobs uppermost in their minds - not every man is a thinking man. The common denominator, in Britain as elsewhere, has a hostile view of Muslims. You can find this out, as I have, as close as your local pub. Mass opinion is the opinion of the common denominator, the majority, the vote-swayers. Of course, significant segments of the British people have not fallen for this, hence the millions on the street protesting the invasion of iraq. Religion does not 'breed' hatred my friend. A hateful person will find any way to express his anger. If he's also religious, it will find expression in that field. If he's a football fan, it will find expression there too - as you must be aware, being a fellow Briton. As for Iraqi blog sites - yes I have seen some of them. Most of them are expats who have not been to iraq since childhood. Some of them have never visited their homeland at all and are therefore not even culturally integrated with their own people and do not share or understand their pain. There numbers are small and they go along with the politics of it. fair enough i suppose. As for wanting to 'rule iraq' or any other part of the world, let me remind you that empire is alive and well. The british empire never did die, it just changed the way it operates. you do not need to physically occupy a country to govern it. all you need is to run the corporations that manage the nation's wealth. that's something that britain, holland, france and the US are very good at. please look at this, it is very important. without understanding how this system operates it will be very diffcult to appreciate why it is that the people of developing countries feel so aggrieved. Ok, now for the biggie. The war against Islam. Is there such a thing? And if so, why? to quote a politically savvy british comedian who saw through the whole charade since it's inception: "No this is absolutely not a war against Islam! It's a war against Muslims.' cracked me up lol. The middle-east is a very important region commercially. it sits between east and west. it also happens to sit on top of a large portion of the worlds proven oil reserves. Whether the 'peak oil' issue is true or not is largely immaterial. The point is that we are being steered into thinking that we are running out of oil fields that are cheap enough to extract the goodies from. Now, of all religions, Islam is the only one that has not separated 'church from state'. In islam, what is good enough for the person is good enough for the state. Islamic governments are bound by the same strict code of ethics as the population as a whole. Such a situation presents very little 'wiggle room' for corrupt wheeling and dealing. That's the beef that Western governments have with Islam. And given the way we have treated them over the last 150 years or so, an islamic arabia would not be willing to do business with the west - at least not on the current 'very favourable' terms. Corporations and intelligence agencies in the West have been very frustrated at the cultural impenetrability of the middle-east. The allure of the 'sexy' western culture has come up against the hard wall of arabian moral inflexibility. of course this is not true throughout arabia - you have very western style cultures in dubai, bahrain, syria, lebanon, parts of egypt and so on. but where it matters, where the oil is, there's a danger of a islamic state (like iran) arising, or spreading. it has been the stated goal of some very powerful politicians in the west to destroy islam by arranging a 'clash of civilisations' (Zbigniew Brzezinsky). Like most things, it's just about a struggle for survival. In this case it has taken on the dimension of a religious war. For strategic reasons.

40 Sparky. Yes, of course I believe that the Iraqi people want a better country for themselves. Certainly few people deserve it more than them, considering what they have been through since 1980. War with Iran, war with the US, sanctions for 10 years, then another war with the US. God help them. But what is occuring in Iraq is going to fracture tha nation in the long run. Whether this is accidental or by design I cannot possibly say. The nation is being divided along ethnic lines - Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites. This is not apparent at the moment but the seeds have already been sown. Also we are even being conditioned to accept this here in this country with constant references to the ethnic origins of the various parties and emphasis being put on the resistance being a 'Sunni insurgency'. This is simply not true. The average Iraqi is not nearly as conscious of these differences as we have been lead to believe. As for Saddam - good riddance to him! What I have doubts about is the motives for starting this war. I see 'divide and rule' - I see a sectarian civil war in the making. Certainly if this does not happen, if the Iraqi people can make this work, then none will be more pleased than myself. But foreign intervention must cease, and help only provided if it is solicited in the first instance. On the issue of Islamic fundamentalists and the rubbish they spew on a regular basis I would say that this has not arisen out of a vacuum. The concerns and needs of the Arab world have been neglected for a long long time. They have been betrayed time and again - ever since the days of 'Lawrence of Arabia'. There is a deep distrust of any Western influence on Arabian issues as a result. This has happend geo-politically with the establishment of Israel despite a promise by Britain to the Arabs that they would not allow such a state to arise (on land already occupied by the Palestinians). During the time of 'Lawrence'. Britain had promised this to the Arabs in exchange for their help in defeating the Turks. It has also happened financially. Remember that the Saudi's and lots of other Arab countries are now almost broke? Inspite of their tremendous wealth vis-a-vis their natural resources? The media would have us believe that this is the result of profligate spending by the ruling families etc. Granted, the ruling families are a pretty degenerate lot and have squandered untold billions, but it would not have been possible to lose all that money in that way. What actually happened is that when Arabia first started extracting their oil, gas and so on, the countries who helped them - mainly the US - demanded that in exchange for their technical expertise these countries would have to deposit their newly-found wealth in 30-year time-deposits in US banks. This they dutifully did. Why not? The wealth that they did not immediately need for civic construction was deposited in a safe bank in a safe country and earning good interest. The only proviso being that they would not withdraw those deposits for 30 years. I reckon anybody with that much spare cash would have done the same. Guess what? Thorough a pretty devious piece of legal and political chicanery, the money that the Arabs had saved got lent to the 3rd world developing countries of Africa and so-on. Without the Arabs' permission! (they knew nothing of this). It is now lost. In fact all this recent talk of 'debt forgiveness' by Western countries and so on is an utter sham. The money that was lent was never ours in the first place. It belongs to the Arabs! How devious can anyone get? And we wonder why they hate us! If the average Arab on the street knew this, they would all hate us (not just the fundamentalists - who are aware of the issues, and the history). The reason the man on the Arab street doesn't know this is because their leaders wouldn't dare tell them. They would be lynched! What would they say? 'Sorry we have squandered our nations wealth, we gave it all to Western banks and they tricked us - so sorry, please forget all about it and go about your business as usual.' It shouldn't be so hard for us to understand their fury. If your life savings that you entrusted to a bank were just given to somebody else without your permission, you would feel the same way. Now I've got nothing against helping the developing countries through cash injections. It's just we should be using our own cash not some else's. Also bear in mind that the aid given to these nations has often come with very strict conditions of economic reform. Largely to further enrich Western corporations! The whole thing stinks. It upsets me to even think about it. And here we were all along thinking we were the 'good guys'. Nothing could possibly be further than the truth. Thanks for keeping this thread alive. 41 hey Pogoman Again good post i agree our governments have been raping countries for years GREED is a terrible thing. Thing is ive never really heard of a democratic government anywhere who is just that, democratic, we are always being told what is best for us and the only ones gaining anything is them. We are forever reading of corruption in our gvmt all to be brushed under the carpet. I know i would be outraged at what our goverment has done to these people i have never commented that im not its just why do young children, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters all innocents have to die. If people are truely angry at governments and their policies then they should attack them not the innocent people. Yes you could say that gets them noticed more but, by who, anyone who cares? or to rephrase that By anyone who can do anything about it? The answer is no because it doesnt effect our polititions directly does it. If they were targets then maybe they would pay more attention. You only have to see proof of this when we are told of impeeding attacks who will be saved and sheltered the Government members, seriously why are these peoples lives any more important than yours or mine, there not, they just think they are. I was reading an iraqi blog a few weeks ago and the the sectarianism thing was brought up there it was a worry to the Blogger he was having concerns over the situation and was basically saying that the New Government would have to act fast to stop this from happening. Soviets Behind Pope Assassination Attempt

Newly uncovered records indicate that the Soviet Union had indeed attempted to assassinate the Pope, as the Vatican had long contended. The documents show that the Turk Mehmet Ali Agca was recruited by the Bulgarian Secret Service, on orders from the Kremlin, to Assassinate John Paul II.

Catholic World News:

Two newspapers, Corriere della Sera and il Giornale , are reporting that files from the Stasi, the East German spy agency, confirm the suspicions long held by Vatican officials. Documents in newly opened files show that the KGB, the Soviet spy agency, ordered the assassination attempt, which was carried out by the Bulgarian secret service.
Dimitar Tzonev, a spokesman for the Bulgarian government, said that officials in Sofia are ready to hand over their secret-service archives to the Italian commission charged with investigating the assassination attempt, which was carried out by Mehmet Ali Agca. An Italian parliamentary commission is also carrying out an investigation of KGB recruitment in Italy.
Corriere della Sera reports that the Soviet service gave the order to assassinate John Paul II, and Bulgarian agents recruited Agca for the effort. That report confirms a theory that was advanced by the Pope himself, in his book, Memory and Identity; the Pope wrote that he was convinced Agca was not acting on his own initiative, "but someone else planned and commanded it." Almost immediately after the attack-- in which Pope John Paul was shot and seriously wounded after his weekly public audience in St. Peter's Square-- Vatican officials quietly advanced the theory that the Soviet Union had authorized the assassination attempt. Italian investigators soon found evidence of ties between Agca and Bulgarian spy officers. But to date there has been no conclusive proof of Soviet involvement.

3 Many people give Ronald Reagan all the credit for bringing down the Soviet Union. Certainly a strong US military and economy had plenty to do with it. But we must give the Eastern Europeans credit too. The selection of a pope from Poland emboldened the Polish masses to once again embrace catholicism. This provided a moral compass that unified the Poles. Born from this unity was The Solidarity Movement led by Lech Walesa and it was their strike that broke the Warsaw Pact's back. When Polish goovernment and the Soviet Union blinked in the face of the challange it was all over. The rest of Eastern Europe followed their lead. John Paul II may be the greatest pope that ever lived. Maybe Catholics should select a Chinese pope next.

Reagan and Ollie North had made an arms for hostages deal with the Iranians and that's why the Iranians let the hostages go as a present to Reagan instead of releasing them sooner. This action was a treasonable offense by the Reaganites in my opinion. One also has to wonder if the Iranians were tipped off for Carter's failed hostage rescue attempt given that the Reaganites already had a deal working with the Iranians and didn't want an October surprise that might queer their chances of winning the impending election. Again, I think John Paul II is the greatest pope that ever lived and he probably agrees with me when I say George Bush is a puke.
